- Obituary, Weyburn Review, May 2000. Linda
Rae Struthers
On Thursday, May 4, 2000, Linda Rae Struthers, late of Vancouver, BC and formerly
of Weyburn, passed away at Vancouver General Hospital at the age of 46 years.
Predeceased by her father, Stuart Ray Struthers; grandparents: Mary Ann and Hugh
Drolet and Marion and Ralph Struthers; step grandparents, Gladys (Pederson) and
Rueben Olson; aunt Eileen Struthers; uncles: Leonard Drolet and Dugene Brown.
Linda is survived by her mother and stepfather, Beth and Russell Olson of Weyburn;
her sisters and brother: Debbie Struthers, Doug (Nadine) Struthers, Nancy (Myles)
Keyowski and Lisa (Greg) Peters; nephew and niece: Daniel Peters and Olivia Keyowski;
as well as numerous aunts, uncles and cousins; and the staff of Easter Seal House,
Vancouver, and her many friends in Vancouver. Linda was born April 15, 1954 in
Regina. She received all her education in Weyburn. She worked one year at Souris
Valley in Weyburn, then took nursing at Kelsey in Saskatoon. She wrote her R.N.
and nursed in Regina, Vancouver, Los Angeles and Toronto. Linda was involved
in drama and worked behind the scenes while in school at the Weyburn Comp and
while in Vancouver and Toronto and was involved with the Trikkie club, which
was a fun group in Vancouver. She enjoyed sewing and doing crafts. Family was
very important to Linda and she was especially excited over the birth of her
dear nephew Daniel and niece Olivia. She had very special feelings for the Lions
Easter House where she worked the last four years. They became her family away
from home. A memorial service was held at Easter Seal House in Vancouver on May
7 with many friends participating. A lily was planted there in her honor. Memorial
service was held Saturday, May 20 at 1:00 p.m. from Knox Presbyterian Church,
Weyburn, with Rev. John Ferrier officiating. Interment followed in Hillcrest
Cemetery, Weyburn. All those in attendance were considered to be honorary pallbearers.
For friends so wishing, donations may be made in her memory to the Easter Seal
House, 3981 Oak Street, Vancouver, BC or to the Canadian Cancer Society. Arrangements
were entrusted to Fletcher Funeral Chapels Ltd., Weyburn.

[Obituary for John E. Hood, born April 10, 1858 West Essa, Simcoe County, Ontario.
Married in 1895 to Minnie Appelbe. Died Nov. 30, 1851, buried at Stayner Cemetery,
Simcoe County. Parents:Joseph Gemmill Hood and Isabella Jack]
John Hood
1858 - 1951
On Friday evening, November 30th, 1851, there passed away at his residence, Main
St., Stayner, a lifelong resident of the County of Simcoe and a resident of Stayner
for over fifty years in the person of John Hood, Barrister of Stayner.
Mr. Hood was born on the east half of lot 11 in the 2nd concession of the Township
of Essa on the 10th day of April, A.D., 1858, on the farm cleared by his father,
the late Joseph G. Hood, and where his nephew, Mr. Russell Hood, resides. The
late Mr. Hood attended the nearby country public school, the Alliston High School
and the Collingwood Collegiate Institute, the latter under the principalship
of the late William Williams. After graduating from the Collingwood Collegiate
Mr. Hood attended Model School in Toronto and then taught for three years at
Lisle when he was required to return to Toronto to attend Normal School in order
to continue teaching. At the request of the Public School Trustee of Lisle he
returned to the Lisle Public School and taught there for a further period of
two or three years when he took a position as clerk in his brother's grocery
store at Banda because the remuneration was a little higher than he received
at teaching. He boarded at the Wilcox Inn at Banda, owned and operated by the
late Joseph Wilcox before the latter moved to Stayner where the Wilcox Inn is
now located.
After clerking in the store at Banda, for a comparatively short time Mr. Hood
returned to Toronto and read law under the late Charles Miller. He graduated
from Osgoods [Osgoode?] Hall in 1881. In 1882 he formed a partnership of Hood,
Jack, Fraser and Sullivan with offices at Barrie, Stayner, Tottenham and Creemore.
Mr. Hood was at the Barrie office, Mr. Jack in Stayner, Mr. Fraser in Tottenham
and Mr. Sullivan in Creemore. About 1901 Mr. Hood came to the Stayner office
on the death of Mr. Jack and practiced law in Stayner up until a short time before
his death.
While in Barrie, Mr. Hood served two years on the Barrie Council, was a member
of Kerr Lodge, A.F. & A.M. No. 230, of which lodge he was master in 1893, and
remained a member of said lodge until his decease. In June, 1844, Mr. Hood (the
oldest Past Master of Kerr Lodge) was presented by the Lodge with a fifty year
Past Master's Jewel.
In 1895 he married Minnie Appelbe of Barrie, who predeceased him in 1934. Of
which marriage there were three children: Annie, Mrs. C.B. Young of Sault Ste.
Marie, Ont.; Mrs. Rita Mae Coulter of Toronto and Joseph G. at home.
A Liberal in politics, Mr. Hood never sought political honors. In Stayner he
was a member of the local Public School Board for nine years, seven of which
he was chairman of the board. In 1910 he was appointed Clerk of the Town, which
position he held until 1945.
The funeral service was held at his late residence, on Monday, Dec. 3rd, and
was conducted by the Rev. J. D. C. Jack, of Jubilee Presbyterian Church, Stayner,
of which church Mr. Hood was a member. The Rev. Mr. Jack took as his text "And
a certain lawyer stood up, saying: "Master, what shall I do to inherit eternal
life?" Pallbearers were Mesers.[?] Duncan Macarthur, A. E. Swallow, J. F. Linn,
Wm. R. Hawkins, R. I. Somerville and Dr. Geo. A. Watson.
The floral tributes were many, among them being those sent by Kerr Lodge, Barrie,
the Stayner Town Council, the Council of the Township of Nottawasaga (of which
municipality Mr. Hood was solicitor for over thirty years), the Stayner Business
Men's Association and from many former clients of long standing as well as his
immediate neighbors.
Mr. Hood leaves to mourn his passing, his above named three children and five
grandchildren.

- Obituary, Allisto Newspaper Aug, 1923. Death
of Mrs. A. A. MCKENZIE.
After a painful illness Mrs. (Dr.) A. A. MCKENZIE succumbed on Monday, the 6th
inst., at the home of her sister, Mrs. J. D. GREENLEES, with whom she had lived
since the death of her husband a few years ago. It was a singular coincidence
that both Mrs. MCKENZIE and her husband should die of cancer. Mrs. MCKENZIE had
the benefit of the best and latest treatment known to medical science. For a
time radium stopped the progress of the malady, but it could not be eradicated
and for some weeks before her death she was unable to leave her bed. Mrs. MCKENZIE
was a daughter of the late John CONNELL and Mrs. CONNELL, the latter being known
to the few remaining pioneers as Hannah Allen. She was born in West Essa in 1860.
In early life Mrs. MCKENZIE taught school and twenty two years ago married the
late Dr. A. A. MCKENZIE. Following her marriage she lived in Stratford for some
years and then located in Tottenham where Dr. MCKENZIE practiced denttistry [sic]
till shortly after his death five years ago. Mrs. MCKENZIE was a most amiable
and sympathetic woman and enjoyed the confidence and esteem of a wide circle
of friends. She was a faithful and consistent member of the Presbyterian church
and took an active part in all the women's organizations, being particularly
interested in missions on account of her sister, Miss CONNELL, being engaged
in foreign missionary work. Mrs. MCKENZIE is survived by three brothers -- Thomas
CONNELL of Alliston; John and Samuel CONNELL of Essa; Miss Isabel CONNELL, Toronto;
Mrs. David NICOL, Alliston; Miss Hannah CONNELL, Formosa, and Mrs. Wm. CORRIGAN,
Essa. The funeral took place on Wednesday, the 8th, Rev. E. F. McL. SMITH conducting
a service at the GREENLEES home. In his brief address he laid stress on the solace
for bereaved ones of the life to come. The remains were interred in the Union
Cemetery beside those of Mrs. MCKENZIE'S husband.

THE 100 YEAR MARK IS PASSED - BY SHELBURNE'S OLDEST CITIZEN, SAMUEL MOORE
- FAMILY GATHERING AT SHELBURNE, LAST THURSDAY, TO MAKE THE EVENT
An unusual event took place in the club rooms of Shelburne Curling Rink,
at noon, Thursday, Sept. 5th, when there was a large family gathering to celebrate
the one hundredth anniversary of the birth of Shelburne's oldest citizen, Samuel
Moore.
Mr. Moore was born in Ontario County, Sept. 5th, 1835. He learned the coopering
trade in his youth and worked in different sections of York County, among his
reminiscences being stories of the early days in Toronto when it was still 'Muddy
York'.
In 1899, at the time of the Fenian Raid, he enlisted at Brooklin for service
against the raiders, and is the possessor of a Fenian Raid medal. The medal is
of silver (with red and white ribbon). On the edge of the medal is stamped, 'Pte.
S. Moore, Brooklin, R. Co.' On the front is the bust of Queen Victoria, with
the inscriptions, 'Fenian Raid 1866 Victoria Regina, Et Imperatrix'. On the reverse
side is the word 'Canada', and a wreath of maple leaves, with the Union Jack
in the centre.
The centenarian has a wee bit of superstition in his make-up, as for nearly forty-five
years he has carried as a luck coin a penny of 1850. On one side is 'Bank of
Upper Canada, 1850', and a horseman and other signs. On the reverse side the
inscription is 'Bank Token', and 'One Penny', with the design of a crown and
sword and anchor between.
Mr. Moore was married in 1862. His wife died in 1924. Of their 13 children, seven
are still living, the following six being present at the birthday party: Norman
Moore, Shelburne, aged 72, who, like his father, is an old age pensioneer; Mrs.
Lottie Vollette, Toronto; Peter Moore, Buffalo, N.Y., whose birthday is also
Sept. 5, he being fifty years of age the same day his father was a hundred; Mrs.
Nellie Whitney, Toronto; Mrs. Walter Hord, Toronto; John Moore, Horning's Mills.
Mr. Moore is an Orangeman and 'just a Tory', to use his own words. Despite his
years, he does not wear spectacles and still likes walking being often seen taking
his constitutional on the streets of the town.
There was a happy time in the Curling Rink club rooms on Thursday when about
forty descendants of the centenarian, along with other relatives and friends,
sat down to dinner, and had a good old 'get-together' afterwards. A large number
of other friends called later to pay their respects.
The relatives who attended were: Norman Moore, Shelburne, son; Mrs. Lottie Vollette,
Toronto, daughter; Peter Moore, Buffalo, N.Y., son; Mrs. Nellie Whitney, Toronto,
daughter; John Moore, Horning's Mills, son; Mrs. Norman Moore, Shelburne, daughter-in-law;
